Impact of ATM Traffic Shaping on MPEG-2 Video Quality

چکیده
This paper presents the impact of traffic shaping on the quality of MPEG-2 video transmissions over ATM networks. The performance evaluation is accomplished by simulating an ATM network using real MPEG2 video streams from video broadcast applications. First, it is shown how cell loss influences the perceived video quality. Cell loss can result in either frame corruption or frame loss, which causes differing video quality impairments. Next, a simulation study is conducted showing how leaky-bucket traffic-shaping influences video quality. It is discussed how shaper parameters have to be chosen to obtain highest video quality. In general, underdimensioning as well as overdimensioning of the shaper should be avoided because it results in video quality degradation. Also, it is shown that the optimal choice of the shaper’s token buffer size depends on the overall motion/burstiness in the video. A well-dimensioned shaper is able to increase video quality significantly as compared to not shaping at all. Most of the research on traffic shaping centers on the characteristic of the shaped traffic rather than on the resulting application performance. This study clearly shows that traffic shaping can actually enhance video quality significantly while it shapes the traffic to adhere to the negotiated QoS (Quality of Service) parameters.

Impact of ATM traffic control on MPEG-2 video quality
In this paper, a performance study of controlled MPEG-2 video traffic over an ATM network is presented. ATM networks are able to support variable bit rate (VBR) video sources. However, to implement QoS contract enforcement, traffic policers such as a Leaky Bucket need to be incorporated in order to change the VBR characteristics of a video stream. Our study investigates the video quality achiev...
متن کاملEffect and Analysis of Sustainable Cell Rate using MPEG video Traffic in ATM Networks
The broadband networks inhibit the capability to carry multiple types of traffic – voice, video and data, but these services need to be controlled according to the traffic contract negotiated at the time of the connection to maintain desired Quality of service. Such control techniques use traffic descriptors to evaluate its performance and effectiveness. In case of Variable Bit Rate (VBR) servi...
متن کاملPredictive shaping for VBR MPEG video traffic transmission over ATM networks
The use of smoothing techniques to remove the periodic fluctuations of the bit rate generated by the codification modes of the MPEG algorithm is very suitable in video transmission. In this way, the multiplexing gain is maximized and the resource allocation is reduced in ATM Networks. The traffic smoothing can be achieved storing the cells in a buffer. This buffer is allocated between the coder...
متن کاملImpact of Traffic Shaping in ATM Networks on Video Quality
This paper presents the impact of traffic shaping on enhancing the interactive video quality over ATM networks. The effects of the leaky bucket traffic shaper on the video quality is studied under different token buffer rates and token buffer sizes, and the tradeoffs involved are discussed. An enhanced traffic shaper using the early drop mechanism is then introduced. Simulation results show tha...
متن کاملStatistical Rate Control for Efficient Admission Control of MPEG-2 VBR Video Sources
Variable Bit Rate video (VBR) allows statistical multiplexing in Asynchronous Transfer Mode Networks (ATM) while offering constant visual quality. A key issue for achieving efficient video multiplexing and therefore efficient admission control is the selection of a VBR video characterization specifying accurately the rate distribution of video sources. In this study we show that the Gamma Distr...
